Can I get free food for my children during summer break?

Yes. Starting in Summer, 2024, California will give benefits called SUN Bucks. Eligible families will get $120 in food benefits for the summer. The benefits will come on an Electronic Benefits Transfer card.

Students who got CalFresh, CalWORKs or MediCal for at least one month during the last school year will automatically get SUN Bucks. This includes students who are home-schooled.

Students who are aged 0-22, and are attending schools that participate in the National School Lunch Program and/or the School Breakfast Program also automatically get SUN Bucks.

Cards for students who are automatically eligible will begin to be mailed on June 1, and all cards for students who are automatically eligible will be mailed by mid-August.

Students who are aged 0-22 and are attending a Community Education Provision or Provision 2 school must apply for SUN Bucks by submitting the school’s alternative income form or school meals application to the school no later than August 31, 2024. Benefits for these children will be issued beginning in mid-August, 2024.
