Education and wages, not marriage
What do immigrant families need more than the federal initiative promoting marriage to low-income families as an antidote to poverty? Help with learning English, acquiring job skills, obtaining health insurance, paying for child care and receiving better wages, according to the California Report Card 2004: Focus on Children in Immigrant Families by Children Now. Nearly one-third of California children live in low-income immigrant families, although three-quarters of low-income immigrant parents work full time, and 81% are married.
